Silky Easter Eggs.

My sister and I tried some neat egg dying techniques on Easter Sunday! I suppose the day has passed now, but bookmark this for next year! It was so easy!

We used some of my grandpa's ties. Super meaningful to be able to do something with my grandpa's things.

We cut them apart, so just the silk is remaining. The ties have to be 100% silk.

Wrap the silk as tightly as you can around the eggs. Wrap with a twist-tie.
Side note: silk scarves also work really well. They're thinner than ties so they wrap better.

Add wrapped eggs to a pot of water with 1/4 cup vinegar. Set to boil for 20 minutes.
Side Note: My sister tried a rubber band instead of twist tie. It made a neat pattern, but cut into the egg a bit so it cracked. If you try this, don't wrap too tightly!

I love dying eggs.

After eggs are cooled, unwrap!

Beautiful patterns!

A few of them are done on brown eggs. A neat alternative!

I got the idea here. What are your favourite easter egg dying techniques?

Enjoy!

Giving Thanks.

Happy thanksgiving! to all my Canadian friends. And my American ones too, though you get to celebrate in a few weeks! I have been given so much, and am so glad I have so much to give back. God is gracious, and I am glad i have such wonderful family to spend my weekend with!

One thing I'm thankful for is shoes! I know there are a lot of people in the world that don't even have one pair of shoes to call their own, and I have MANY shoes. I bought a couple pairs of Toms last year, and they lasted me the year, but I kind of wanted to prolong their life. You can see my last patch-job here

They're looking pretty sad, hey? Yuck.

So, I cut up some burlap (measuring very accurately by holding it up and looking to see if it fit), and seam-ripped the 'Toms' badge off the back of my shoes, and re-sewed it onto the burlap. I then just did a finishing stitch around the edge.

Alright, now this is the step that any seamstresses out there will gasp at. To attach the burlap...I used...hot glue. I know, I know, probably not the best option. But, the shoes were going in the garbage if they weren't fixed! For the front patch, I basically just glued as I went. Improv re-do!

And there we go! Wear-able Toms yet again! If you have any questions, comment or email me!

A nice craft project to do at home on my thanksgiving break. I'm back at school now, and though I caught up on a lot of sleep, I still feel so tired! I was too used to minimal hours of sleep that I couldn't handle a good night's sleep! I spent the rest of my weekend with family, eating lots of turkey, and watching lots of Project Runway. Such a great show! Don't tell me what's currently, as I was catching up online, and haven't quite got up to speed yet!

What are you thankful for? Be it a thanksgiving weekend for you or not.

Enjoy!

Have a seat.

Hello there! It's your friend, Kristen, the college student/blogger. Which means I'm so busy all the time. I started classes today, which are fantastic. I love school. And now, I finally have a chance to post one of my favourite re-do's! I found this chair for $5 at a garage sale, and with a little leftover fabric from garden aprons my mom was making, and some leftover blue-grey paint, It turned out very cute!

The out-dated chair before:

And, after!

I love it. It fits in nicely with my dorm decor, which I will share soon! What are your crafting projects as of late?

Enjoy!

Call me! I have a table to answer at!

Hello there! And happy Monday to you, my readers! It is a good day! Today is a stat holiday where I live, but I got to work! Yes, i do mean 'got to'! I am totally fine with working a stat, because that means time and a half for me! Yippee!

I finally got around to re-doing this fantastic table this weekend. I found it at a garage sale two months ago, asked how much for it, and the woman said I could have it for $1! Can you believe it? I was thinking about it recently, and questioning whether I paid more for it, but I am quite certain I only put down a loonie for this cute little thing! Unbelievable find!

I didn't realize when I bought it, but my mom says that in the 60's, these were extremely popular because obviously, there weren't cordless phones, so if you were going to talk to someone on the phone, you'd want to sit, so thus, the ever-popular telephone table! The fabric was a little musty smelling, but otherwise it was in very good shape. Here's the re-do!

I took off the first layer of orange velour, and what do I find? Another lifetime of this chair. In the form of a cowboy/pioneer style print. Mmm, how lovely.

Once I got to the foam, my mom suggested I cut a piece of quilt batting to keep it nice and soft, and did so for me.

Somebody else found it nice and soft too. (This is Gabby, the family dog. She is old and sometimes acts like a lady- hence the tucked-in paws)

Isn't it fresh and pretty? I happen to like it a lot. The plan is for it to go under a window when I move back to the dorm for my second year of college (In one short month! I have so much decorating to prepare!). It's quite a small piece of furniture, so it will fit nicely, as well as host all my plants so they can receive direct sunlight!

I've been told I should paint it, but I kind of like it how it is! Tell me, what do you think? Please, leave a comment and let me know!

Enjoy!

Just Add Some Lace!

Have you ever had that shirt in your closet that you bought on impulse because it was 2 for one, and you only actually wanted one shirt? Well if you have, this is the post for you!

See this shirt? olive green. A fine colour. but as a plain cheap tank? not a fan.

Is that the same shirt you ask? Yes it is! But tastefully adorned with lace, and fancied into an outfit for a night on the town, it looks much better!

outfit:
tank: Bluenotes
skirt: vintage Anne Klein, thrifted
shading my eyes from the sun: feet first (yesterday's find!)
heels: Wal-mart.

Do you have an old shirt that needs some love? Add some lace!

I am not going out for a night on the town, and I can't exactly where my favourite thrifted skirt and heels to a summer BBQ! Tuesday plans anyone?

Enjoy!

Skirts..Skirt..Skirk..Shirk..Shirking my skirt?

Yes. It's true. I have been abandoning my skirt. Skirts actually. There are two in the process. I love them both dearly but have come into some difficulty making both. As I am far, far from skilled at sewing, I haven't overcome these obstacles.
But! Nevertheless (favourite long word of the week) I will share the progress of my two skirts so far. Both very close to being done, both not wearable. Ah well, the trials of being more ambitious than skilled.

It's hard to tell what this one is, but that top part is the waist band, then i have two pleats.

Apparently I didn't measure right, and ran out of fabric. So, i just added a triangle. It looks good in the end, it really does.

My beautiful belt loops. I love this fabric! (You may remember it from my 'Off the Loom' post)

Skirt Numero Two:
Started out with two mens XL dress shirts from MCC, cut off the sleeves, and split them.

Sewed them all together...

I have hemmed this now, no pictures of that yet, and it is turning out a little 50's waitress, so I'm thinking I may have to take it apart and make the sleeves a little narrower. Too much work!

For a different look at the skirt out of shirts, click here. I actually found this idea on Threadbanger, but some of the channels stopped, so I could no longer find it:(

Here's another idea for Men's dress shirts that is pretty neat! A very cute dress if I could ever master that sewing machine.

I also found a whole post about men's shirts re-do projects on Threadbanger! Click here to see skirts, bags, dresses and more!

Enjoy!

Safari? Vintage.

I bought a pair of shorts a while back, and have worn them about twice. I decided I liked everything about them except for the buttons. They remind me of someone going on a safari. LIke those cargo shorts someone would wear as they travel across the African Sahara? Ya, that's what I was enduring. So I searched through the depths of the Wal-Mart clearance buttons and came up with some really neat buttons, a little more vintage than safari. Success!

Safari...

and Vintage!
